BONUS BLOG!!

Our BIGGEST CONGRATULATIONS TO KHANH TRAN-WINNER OF OUR FIRST ANNUAL "TRIP TO CAPE COD" CONTEST!!!

YIPPEE!

The points have been counted and we are thrilled to announce KHANH TRAN from San Diego California as the WINNER! Of our first annual "Trip To Cape Cod" Contest!!

We had such a blast with this contest! And we are SO grateful to all that participated! Our idea was to encourage our customers to TELL THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY about just how wonderful Giving Tree Jewelry is! Every person that then purchased something and used the special code alloted to the participant, earned that person a point! It was a very, very close finish, but in the end, Khanh's constant, gentle 'reminding' to her friends and people she works with.. put her on top!

Here is a little bit more about our winner.. who we CANNOT WAIT TO HOST ON CAPE COD THIS SUMMER!

Khanh and her girls! *the beautiful girls, not the goats :)

From Rachel
I have never met Khanh and am not sure how she first came to discover Giving Tree.. (I need to ask! :)) but I am so glad she did!

I do remember however, how I started to 'know' her as the beautiful person she is...
Around the holidays, Khanh ordered 5 or 6 pieces.. really, really COOL pieces, things I would order for myself! If I recall correctly, about three were gifts, and two or three were for Khanh herself.
Khanh asked my advice for the pieces she would get for herself.. if I liked them together, how I would wear them, etc.
I LOVE when customers ask questions! I try to always be honest. I suggested switching out one piece for another by the same artist, as I thought it would layer better. Khanh was thrilled, and said she had actually been REALLY close to ordering the piece I suggested, but had made the change at the last moment.
Maybe this synchronicity bonded us.. but the next thing I knew, we were friends on Facebook, and suddenly, I was the recipient of the HUGE, AMAZING gift, of getting to revel in the pictures of Khanh (and Husband Charlie's) three BEAUTIFUL girls..Chloe, Avery, Gabrielle. OH THOSE FACES! I had to email Khanh again and tell her that I knew for sure, that my new 'thing' whenever I was feeling blue.. was going to be to look at the photos on her facebook page. Pure, infectious joy!

I felt something with these girls.. they reminded me, of ME.. when I was young.. just so carefree, so able to express myself.. because I had parents that ..let me. i knew this was true of Khanh and Charlie. I could feel it.

Khanh and I had another wonderful moment of solidifying friendship when we did our promotion for Valentines Day, asking for 'love stories' ..After reading hers, again, I had to write to Khanh to tell her how much her story of love had moved me. *I reposted it at the end..

All this to say I feel like I DO know Khanh, even though I don't know many of the "details" of her day to day life. I'm not sure what Khanh does for a living although I know she is in medicine somehow, because many of the customers she referred to Giving Tree were nurses she worked with. I remember one email I was sharing with her my 'big idea' to be revealed SOON! At that point in time, I was calling it something whose acronym was TKA..
Khanh emailed back and said "no no.. everyone knows that only as "Below the Knee Amputation'

I thought. er.. not EVERYONE :)

And I know Khanh does a LOT of philanthropic work. In fact, she had the brilliant idea to promote Giving Tree with this beautiful basket she made for a fundraising auction. Really, how cool is she? (thank you!)

So it seems I still have some to learn about Khanh..
The thing I know for sure..
Khanh is a wonderful, beautiful, endless source of love and support as a friend, wife and mother-caring, diligent, loving, kind, embracing and encouraging in all regards..
Oh!and lastly, I know Khanh is an AMAZING 'P.R' person for Giving Tree Jewelry! Even though Charlie teases her about "pushing jewelry", we could not be more grateful that Khanh expends some of her beautiful energy helping grow 'The Tree'

So it is with all our JOY FILLED HEARTS we say:
CONGRATULATIONS TO KHANH FOR WINNING OUR CONTEST!
We can't wait for her visit (with guest!) and we will surely take lots and lots of pictures!!

And Thank You EVERYONE who participated in this super fun contest! It filled us with happiness to think of "Giving Tree' goodness being spread around!
There really would be no 'Giving Tree' without all of you! And we hope you can all come visit us on Cape Cod!

With so much love!
Rachel, Judith, Laura, Courtney and all of Giving Tree Jewelry

*Khanh's love story:

"REAL LOVE"
My husband Charlie and I were set up on a blind date. Our first ‘real’ date was on February 12, 1994, when we went to an exhibit gala at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Charlie was nervous about whether it was too early in the relationship to get me a Valentine but did end up getting me a box of heavenly hand-made truffles from an elite German chocolatier in Baltimore. On this date, my husband quickly learned that he needed to learn to cook for his own survival….for when I said that i would make him breakfast, it meant a smoothie from a blender with granola on top! We dated long distance for the next three years – he in San Francisco and I in Baltimore, for work reasons, including our first year of marriage, when we took different planes back to our respective coasts, after a brief honeymoon in Santa Fe……It has been sixteen years and a lot of life since that first date. We’ve had our share of good times and bad times, triumphs and disappointments. We’ve been best friends, and at times we’ve been adversaries. We have grown closer, and we have hurt each other. And at times, i forget where I am, or what I have, but I only need to watch Charlie kick around a pink soccer ball with our three little girls, help them dress their Barbies, watch endless ballet recitals (instead of ESPN), sew a button on one of the girls’ favorite jeans, or plant sunflowers and (giant) pumpkins with them….and I am reminded of this real love……

New Monday Blog!

As some of you know who read this blog fairly regularly (THANK YOU!) I have been spending some time in NYC. Today is my last day for a while as we throw open the doors of Giving Tree Gallery this weekend and I cannot WAIT to welcome everyone to our little bit of heaven this summer!
If you are thinking of a Cape Cod visit, please tell us. The amazing, incredible Courtney created an INTERACTIVE CALENDAR!

As for the 'theme' of this New Monday blog.. I actually started writing this on Saturday. See, I'm a SUPER early riser, so I usually spend the hours between about 430 and 1130 doing all things "Giving Tree" And then have some time to.. wander in this city.
Inevitably, I spend most of my time observing and enjoying... People. Specifically, people being kind to each other.

"In the end, I just want to be kind"- Mary Oliver

For me, these "visions" of kindness, no matter how small (someone stepping aside to let someone pass.. Opening a door etc) are as necessary to my well being as...breathing.

One "kindness sighting" and I can feel buoyed for hours..

I bring this up because I have been doing lots of "soul searching" I guess is the term, for lack of a better word... Trying to define, refine.. What I want and need to "contribute" to the world I live in and receive so much joy from.

(*A hint to what is rising to the top, our recent OUR FRIENDS page)

And I hope, next week, to reveal even more!

What I know for sure is that these themes of kindness and connection have been informing and inspiring EVERYTHING I do, as well as keeping me going when I start to doubt myself.

Just the other day I received a wonderful message from a beloved customer, Lori. :)-The timing could not have been better. Lori wrote to tell me she was wearing her Tami Morrissey Safety Pin Bracelet that day to remind her how her friends are like the pins of the bracelet, and how they all help hold her together.

Needless to say, this made my day!

That night, just as I was falling into sleep.. I was recalling the other acts of kindness I had seen. I realized I had witnessed quite a bit of 'hugging' that day, and it got me thinking. And these were the thoughts, just before I fell into a deep, and wonderful, sleep:

The Mechanics Of A Great Hug
observations from the streets of NYC

A great hug connotes affection.
This is obvious.
How could it not?
Two people,
folding into one another's arms,
pressing into each other
for a moment,
taking on the weight of the other
if one moves, or misses
both fall.

With a great hug there is
of course,
"giving"
but there is also
"receiving"
And both things matter
in equal amounts.
Inherent in this
perfect equation
there is both power,
and powerlessness.
All at once.
A willingness to 'let in'
A willingness to 'let go'
both absolutely essential

A great hug is not like dancing
There is no "lead"
In a great hug.

No one owns a hug.

And finally, I have decided
A great hug
has something else in it
perhaps more subtle
than all these other things-

A great hug
can sometimes, very definitely be
a "putting back together"of sorts

Meaning,

sometimes,

we all

spill out the sides of ourselves

Come a bit

unraveled

undone.

A great hug

with arms wrapped round,

Can sometimes be

two friends

doing what they can

to put the other

back together

again.

I smile thinking of this last part
When I see people hugging now.

That is why I wanted to share it with you.

Think about it, the next time you see two people hugging.

Think of it as a "gathering up"
of all the good stuff

the other person needs
to carry around with them

but, like a too full bag full of peaches at the grocery store
may have been close to letting spill out.

A great hug
lifts us up
and
holds us in
and
puts us back together
again.

New Blog Monday!

Born from inspiration from a friend, some empowering thoughts!

HAPPY MONDAY!! Time for a new blog!*

*I am going to try to keep this short..ish :) but I'm a sneaky one. .there are lots of links to great things, and even more from me, so it only 'seems' short!

I have a good friend, Nish, that always seems to "know" what I am working on and dreaming about even though we rarely see each other...

Lately, for instance, I have really been thinking about how AMAZING this little business called 'Giving Tree Jewelry' is. In fact, I can't think of any other business I would consider as special. And I say this with absolute objectivity :) because so much of what makes me feel this way, has more to do with YOU than it does with US. In short, I think Giving Tree has the greatest customers in the world! And after I watched the video Nish sent, I realized that my admiration of you all, and my desire to help create the best business for you was the best source of inspiration I could ask for!

Here is what Nish sent:

http://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action.html

This is a video from the amazing website www.ted.com
This video is pretty geared towards business, but in a nutshell the speaker explains that for any business to be 'great' you have to start with the "why" you are doing it, not the "what" it is that you are doing.
I realized, quite quickly, after watching, that I want to make Giving Tree a wonderful business so that I can reciprocate all the happiness our customers have brought to us! It was quite a revelation, especially at about 5:30 am today:). And I found myself so inspired, I even updated our "About Us" story to try to account for the last 5 years. Check it out! (See how I snuck more in here ;))

I love the Ted.com website. For those that don't know, it's a collection of talks on just about anything and everything that is good in the world!

Another one (from Nish, of course.. he of all things totally 'right on' and 'pitch perfect' for me) that really went a long way in giving me the courage and road map to begin to start actualizing another big dream of mine (yes, stay tuned :)) was this one:

http://www.ted.com/talks/gary_vaynerchuk_do_what_you_love_no_excuses.html

To my friends (you) following dreams, endeavoring to launch or nurture a creation, I say watch it!

Here are two other perennial favorites

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/matthieu_ricard_on_the_habits_of_happiness.html
(thank you Khanh! You are an inspiration for me!)

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/jill_bolte_taylor_s_powerful_stroke_of_insight.html

(thank you Amy for the introduction! You're SO cool! I've now watched it about 100 times, never without crying)

All of this to say, thank you Nish for the source of the revelation, and thank you to all of YOU that support and believe in Giving Tree, and give us our beautiful answer to the question of "why"?

With wishes for endless inspiration and revelation!

New (MUSIC) Monday Blog

I got the music in me!

Anyone who knows me, even a little bit, knows that one of my favorite things in the world, a pure love of mine, the most revered art form, the thing that sustains me, pulses through my veins...(oh ok, you get the idea?))

is music.

Ten+ years of teaching spinning classes and NEVER playing the same c.d twice probably didn't do anything to quell it.. but I know the love affair started way before that... A blue phonograph in an only childs bedroom, was the key that unlocked the entire world...

So today, a very busy Monday, I just want to celebrate, and share, this love of music. Because "just the right song" at "just the right time.." can change everything!

So here is a little list, with links.. just of the music moving me ever-forward into the light.. right now!

And no, this doesnt have much to do with jewelry.. at all, but I happen to think both great music, and the amazing pieces we carry on www.givingtreejewelry.com, come from the same place of inspiration and have the amazing ability to 'kickstart' your heart, or your dreams.. or whatever needs a little fire!

*I did just update my WHAT RACHEL IS WEARING page.. and I am, really and truly, wearing all of these pieces as I find myself inside the most amazing city in the world, with the most amazing friends anyone could EVER ask for (thank you KJK!)

New Monday Blog!!

Be A Part Of Giving Tree Gardens! Share Your Favorite Words!

Sign in gardens reads "Love One Another"

Quotes work too! This from Judith

Charming Gardener, treasured friend, and GTJ artist JENN GUNN sharing some words!

HAPPY MONDAY!
We decided to make this weeks blog, (and all the other FUN stuff we do here, like Win on Wednesday and Thankful Thursday) -all about words..

And you will be happy to know, not all of them will be mine ;)

Instead, this week, we asking you for some favorite words of yours that have lifted you up, inspired you, carried you through. For there is nothing like 'well placed' words, (metaphorically speaking).. as in, when they go right to your heart, and help heal it or bring it joy!

And speaking of 'well placed' :) this missive is actually a very pointed one.

We want to place YOUR words in our gardens!

Every year, as we revive, reshape, and finally "re-debut" the gardens at Giving Tree, we try to make it a really special experience for everyone who walks through.
Not only do we care for the gardens, but we put up some natural art pieces, and my favorite thing- We make slates with short quotes, poems...WORDS on them!

This is where you come in! This last year has seen the birth and nurturing of a really, really special community around Giving Tree Jewelry, and we are most thankful of this and want to celebrate it everyday. So much GOOD STUFF has happened as a result of a group of people 'meeting' each other and sharing their words.

So.. share your words some more, and the ones that fit on the slates will be etched in and placed in our gardens for as long as nature sees fit!

This year too, instead of my just doing it with glue and laminated paper (NOT successful) a dear friend has offered to have the quotes and poems etched on slate for us. This is a HUGE gift!
So.. share your words.. the ones that make you feel wonderful. Something you would most like to see if you were 'wandering through a pretty garden on a beautiful day'..
and then..

COME VISIT US AND DO THIS FOR REAL!!

Thank You for being a part of the blooming gardens in our hearts...

With love,
Rachel

*Any quote you love could work.. even one of your own!.. Just share!"

"Let us be grateful for the people that make us happy, for they are the charming gardeners that make our souls blossom" Proust
